It reached the top ten in America in that same year, reaching number nine. This was Pete Townshend's only solo American Top 10 hit, but it charted as high as any single by The Who released in America - "I Can See For Miles" also hit #9 According to the 1985 Pete Townshend "My Generation" radio special, Pete Townshend's manager Chris Thomas said that he hated the track and he felt it should be have been left off the Empty Glass because it didn't sound like a Pete Townshend song. Weeks after the release, Pete Townshend's manager called to apologize when the song became the first hit single from Empty Glass. A cover of this song was recorded by Audio Adrenaline, with the interpretation of "my love" referring to God's love. This may be consistent with the composer's intent: In the liner notes of Townshend's Gold Remaster CD, he refers to this song as "Jesus sings". It was also covered by M. Ward for the 2005 Starbucks compilation album, Sweetheart 2005: Love Songs, and by Pete Townshend's own band The Who. Sherie Rene Scott covered the song on her 2001 album ...Men I've Had. A cover of this song was also recorded by Michael Cavanaugh. Actors Steve Carell and Dane Cook are credited with a cover version featured in the 2007 film Dan in Real Life. This version was arranged by Sondre Lerche, who also recorded a cover for the soundtrack of the film. In July 2012, the Honda Motor Company used this song in a TV commercial advertisement campaign. The song has been used frequently in film, most notably the comedy genre, often as trailer music for movies such as Jerry Maguire and How Do You Know, and then as end credit song for Mr. Deeds in 2002; Jersey Girl and Along Came Polly, both in 2004.
