Конструкция there is / there are используется для сообщения о местонахождении предметов и лиц. Запомните простое правило: если русское предложение начинается с обстоятельства места то есть, первое слово русского предложения отвечает на вопрос «где?», то английское предложение мы начнем с there is / there are.
При этом само обстоятельство места нужно ставить в конец предложения. Рассмотрим на примере:
«В коробке где? сидит мышка»
There is a mouse in the box.
Русское предложение начинается с обстоятельства места -- «в коробке». Поэтому английское предложение мы начали с There is, а само обстоятельство места - in the box поставили в конец предложения.
Английские предложения с конструкцией there is / there are переводятся с конца. Например: There is a palm on the beach — на пляже растет пальма.
Обратите внимание, что глагол to be is или are в данном случае может переводиться как «лежит», «стоит», «растет», «висит» одним словом, «находится», поэтому при переводе предложения «На столе лежит книга» не нужно лезть в словарь и искать, как по-английски «лежит», в данном случае предложение переводится следующим образом: There is a book on the table:
При указании на местонахождение одного предмета или человека, используем there is, если предметов или людей много, используем there are.
При перечислении нескольких предметов, если первый предмет стоит в единственном числе, употребляем there is:
На столе ручка, карандаш и книги. -- There is a pen, a pencil and books on the table.
Если же при перечислении первый предмет в ряду стоит во множественном числе, используем there are : На столе книги, ручка и карандаш -- There are books, a pen and a pencil on the table.
Если предложение начинается с подлежащего «кто?» или «что?» конструкция there is / there are не используется, переводим, как есть: машина стоит на улице — the car is in the street.
